Carroll E. Skiles

July 17th, 1931 – July 26th, 2020

Carroll Eugene Skiles, 89, of Astoria, IL, passed away at 8:53 pm on Sunday, July 26, 2020 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria, IL. He was born on July 17, 1931 in Astoria, the son of Leland C. and Hazel (Hoke) Skiles. Carroll married Wanda M. Hollenback on August 25, 1951 in Ipava, Illinois. She preceded him in death on July 19, 2020.

Those surviving are his daughter, Janet K. Skiles of Carthage, IL, son, Mark T. Skiles of Astoria, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death his parents, brother, Leland Junior Skiles and sister, Charlotte J. Walden.

Carroll was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a farmer all of his life. He was strong, honest, highly respected, hard-working man, often from early morning to late night. If it was broken, he fixed it, if it wasn’t available, he would create it. He wouldn’t take no for an answer.

He was tender-hearted, kind and gentle man with a giving heart. He would always take time to help out a fellow farmer who was in a tough spot. He was always there when he was needed. He always made us laugh and gave us so many memories to cherish.

"A man's greatest possession is his dignity and no calling bestows this more abundantly than farming. Hard work and honest sweat are the building blocks of a person's character. They believe when they grow old and sum up their days, they will stand tall and feel pride in the life they have lived." (from the Farmers Creed)

A graveside service will be held at 11 am on Friday, July 31, 2020 in the Astoria Cemetery. Pastor Matthew Thiner will be officiating. Military rites will be provided by the Astoria American Legion Post #25. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Astoria Fire and Rescue Squad or the Fulton County Humane Society.

Everything that was written about Uncle Carroll was so true. There was so much love for him and so much respect. He was a man who forever will be remembered and one way to be with the one woman he loved was to be broke himself 1 week and he proved he too would be with Aunt Wanda again. This time for eternity.
Love
