Virgil L. Stambaugh

May 20th, 1942 – May 10th, 2016

Virgil L. Stambaugh, age 73 of Astoria, IL, passed away on Tuesday, May 10, 2016 at 5:12 p.m. at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria, IL.. He was born on May 20, 1942 in Astoria, the son of Wilson and Fern M. (Hopping) Stambaugh. He married Opalene Trone on May 29, 1963 in Astoria. She survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Jody (and Kevin) Kolves of Astoria and Jenny (and Mark) Hendricks of Rushville, IL, two sons, Todd (and Kathy) Stambaugh and Tim (and Shannon) Stambaugh, both of Astoria, 13 grandchildren; Chase (and Holly) Lockard, Dalton Kolves, Mariah Kolves, Christopher Kolves, Brent Kolves, Clinton Kolves, Willow Jordan (and John) Henderson, Dusti Rose Hendricks, Molly (and Lucas) Corrick, Nick Rittenhouse, Joel Rittenhouse, Samantha Stambaugh, and Ethan Stambaugh, 16 great-grandchildren; Aliyah Kolves, Brelynn Kolves, Savannah Shaw, Addi Kolves, Gavin Lockard, Heyvynn, Walker, and Granger Henderson, Dakota and Archer Corrick, Breezi Kelly, Autumn Rittenhouse, Emma Carroll, Jordyn Cozad, Charlie Pasley, and Braydan Pasley.

Virgil was preceded by his parents, his brother Stanley Stambaugh, and his sister Arletta Bollinger.

He was an Army veteran.

Virgil was a lifetime farmer. He also was an independent trucker and later drove for L and N Industries in Rushville, IL. He drove a truck for over 34 years.

He enjoyed fishing, but work was his life.

He was a member of the Astoria American Legion Post #25. In his youth, he attended the Astoria Church of the Nazarene and was currently attending the Astoria Christian Church.

Services will be held on Saturday, May 14th at 10:30 am at the Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria. Visitation will take place on Friday, May 13th from 5-8 pm at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Woodland Cemetery in Astoria with military rites provided by the Astoria American Legion Post #25. Memorials may be given to the Astoria American Legion Post #25.

Virgil was one of the kindest, friendliest, hardest working people I ever met. I will be out of town and unable to make it to the visitation or funeral, but please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you during this time.

To Opal and all your family. I will miss him tormenting me at work, at the station and anywhere else he saw me. I hope he and my momma have a good visit up there in heaven.
