Martha Jane Miller

August 6th, 1933 – April 19th, 2019

Martha Jane Miller, age 85 of Vermont, IL, passed away at 9:30 pm on Friday, April 19, 2019 at the Joliet Area Community Hospice in Joliet, IL. She was born on August 6, 1933 in Galesburg, IL, the daughter of Clifford C. "Eph" and Katherine F. (Whitney) Mercer. She married Fred Miller on July 29, 1956 in Vermont. He preceded her in death on June 30, 2014.

Martha Jane was also preceded in death by her two brothers, Charles David and Whitney O. Mercer.

She is survived by three sons; Kenneth (and Linda) Miller of Coal City, IL, Jeffrey Miller of Vermont, IL and Clifford (and Charla) Miller of Vermont, IL, three grandchildren; Michael (and Caitlynne) Miller, Jason (and Savanah Rea) Miller, and Megan (and Matthew) McIlvane, and five great-grandchildren; Journie Miller, Winnsor Miller, Mason McIlvane, Bennett Miller, and Mila McIlvane, and a special friend of the family Dee Andreas.

Martha was a 1951 graduate of VIT High School and a 1955 graduate of MacMurray College with a degree in Business Education. She taught school at Dunlap for one year. She then worked as a teller for the Bank Of Cicero for several years before working for the Vermont State Bank in Vermont, IL for over 20 years.

She was an active member of the Chapter C PEO Sisterhood for over 64 years.

Martha and Fred enjoyed traveling and wintering in Florida. She enjoyed flower gardening and bird watching.

She loved spending time with her grandchildren and her Golden Retrievers.

Services will be held on Tuesday, April 23, 2019 at 10:00 am at the Vermont Christian Church. Tim Gilliland will officiate. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Vermont Christian Church Food Pantry. Interment will be in the Vermont Cemetery. Visitation will take place on Monday, April 22, 2019 from 6-8 pm at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria, IL.

Kenny & Linda, Jim & I are very sorry to here of your loss! It was just a few short weeks ago we saw you both after you had visited her in the hospital. We just never know when the last time will be when we see our loved ones. Praying you have peace in knowing she is no longer in pain here on earth.
