Lawrence "Jake" E. McCombs

April 25th, 1927 – June 20th, 2020

Lawrence "Jake" E. McCombs, 93, of Astoria, IL, passed away at 4:30 pm on Saturday, June 20, 2020 at Renaissance Care Center in Canton, IL. He was born on April 25, 1927 in Bader, IL, the son of Edward and Alma (Trone) McCombs. He married Estyl Gunter on November 1, 1989 in Astoria. She survives.

Also surviving are his son, Jeff (and Brandi) McCombs of Peoria, IL, daughter, Pam McCombs of Peoria, IL, 11 grandchildren, Ella McCombs, Cora McCombs, Anissa (and Matt) Plummer, Alisha (and Casey) Morrow, Dustin (and Heather) Cox, Tara (and Damon) Sherrod, Brandon Gunter, Ashley (and Brian) Griffin, Lacey (and Danny) France, Westin Gunter, Lexie Gunter, several great-grandchildren, 4 step-sons, Dan (and Bonnie) Gunter of Havana, IL, Tim Gunter of Roseville, IL, Tom Gunter of West Peoria, IL and Jim (and Tammy) Gunter Alexis, IL and brother, Robert Lee “Jake” McCombs of Astoria.

He is preceded by his sister, Erma Easley.

He served in the U.S. Navy as a Seabees in World War II and the Korean War.

Jake drove a feed truck after returning from the Navy. He then went on to work for the State of Illinois Highway Department. He retired in 1989 from Caterpillar Tractor Company in Mossville, IL.

He was a member of the Astoria American Legion for over 70 years. He collected antiques and enjoyed doing yard work.

A graveside service will be held at 2 pm on Thursday, June 25, 2020 at the Astoria Cemetery. Military rites will be provided by the Astoria American Legion Post #25. Pastor Matthew Thiner will be officiating. Memorials may be made to EP!C in Peoria, IL or the Astoria American Legion Post #25.
