Helen L. McCurdy

February 28th, 1931 – November 2nd, 2020

Helen L. McCurdy, 89, of Vermont, IL, passed away at 6:08 pm on Monday, November 2, 2020 at Unity Point Methodist in Peoria, IL. She was born on February 28, 1931 in Center Point, IA, the daughter of William ‘Chub’ and Helen Irene (Lamprell) Wheeler. She married Harold McCurdy on September 2, 1951 in Vermont. Harold preceded Helen in death on October 19, 2020.

Also preceding her are her parents, son, Dale McCurdy, 1 great-grandson, Knox Davis Kendrick, 2 brothers, Dale and Elzo and 3 sisters, Velma, Florence and Bertha. She is also preceded by her Aunt Lena and Uncle Jerry Sears and cousins, Blanche and Dorothy Sears who all helped raise Helen after the death of her mother at a very young age.

Survivors include her son, David (and Kathy) McCurdy of Vermont, daughter, Barbara (and Danny) Kendrick of Vermont, daughter-in-law, Rose McCurdy of Vermont, 8 grandchildren, Heather Moehn, Aaron (and Sarah) McCurdy, Dylan (and Kayla) McCurdy, Skylar McCurdy, Chris (and Jennifer) Kendrick, Josh (and Ashley Davis) Kendrick, Gabe (and Deanna) Kendrick, and Travis (and Niky Friday) McCurdy, 16 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandson.

She first worked in the office for Bader and Company. She later was the Assistant Librarian at VIT High School for several years. During the summer months, herself and a bus driver would take what was called the Book Mobile around the school district and would act as a library for children in the country areas.

Helen played the piano and organ at the Vermont Methodist Church for 30 plus years. She was also a den mother for the local Boy Scout troop for several years. Helen stayed very busy driving her kids to several sports and activities.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 7 in the Vermont Cemetery. Reverend Bob Greene will officiate. Memorials may be made to the Vermont Public Library. There is no visitation.

Oh how sad I am to hear of Helen's and Harold's passing. Iloved them so from seeing them each year at the Vermont H.S. reunion. Sweet, caring people. My parents, Ronald and Doris Cook loved them too and maybe will meet them at the gates to heaven. I am so sorry for your (and my) loss. I will always remember them.
