Rick L. Harris

June 23rd, 1952 – April 21st, 2021

Rick L. Harris of Vermont, IL, passed away at 11:17 pm on April 21, 2021 at McDonough District Hospital in Macomb, IL. He was born on June 23, 1952 in Beardstown, IL, the son Robert and Betty (Green) Harris. Rick married Donalene Seward on September 18, 1976 in Ipava, IL. She survives.

Also surviving is one daughter, Haven (and Jayson) Baudino of Table Grove, and 2 boys that were like grandsons to him, Tommy and Donnie.

Preceding him in death are his parents, sister, Vicki Elgin and his brother, Robert Allen Harris.

Rick was a graduate of Spoon River College. He then served as the secretary Treasurer of Bader & Company Grain Elevator for 22 and a half years. He went on to work at the Vermont State Bank, where he was the head loan officer for 11 years. Since 2003, he worked at the Table Grove State Bank, where he was Vice President, a loan officer and served on the Bank’s board. He also was a 1/3 owner of Spoon River Auction Company and was involved for over 25 years. He served for 10 years as a Vermont Township Trustee. He was a member of the Astoria Lions Club and the Vermont Masonic Lodge #116.

He attended the Vermont Methodist Church where he served on the Pastor Parish Committee and was the Church Auditor for 12 years. He most recently attended The Crossing in Macomb.

His greatest accomplishment was being the best husband and father. All who knew him, loved him. He touched so many lives over the years.

Services will be held at 3 pm on Sunday, April 25, 2021 at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria. Minister David Haney will be officiating. The Vermont Masonic Lodge #116 will provide a Masonic Service. A visitation will take place from 1 to 3 pm on Sunday before the service. Mask and social distancing will be required in the funeral home. Interment will be in the Vermont Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Vermont Fire and Rescue Squad or the Vermont Memorial Ballpark.

Rick was my friend, from 4th grade on. We spent a lot of time together after his accident. We shared an apartment in Canton while we went to Spoon River. Time and distance got in our way, but I always felt he was just a call away. Rick held no bitterness and had only friends. Life well led friend..

Grief & loss is a hard thing and is being experienced by family, friends and classmates of Rick. Knowing him since jr. h.s., Rick's kind personality and genuineness were two of his consistent traits. He and I were from the VIT Class of 1970. I've only attended one class reunion since graduating, but there were two particular people that I wanted to make sure to see and talk to. One was not at the reunion, but the other was Rick Harris. He was just as I had remembered--kind, respectful and genuine. Our deepest sympathy to Donalene, Haven and families.
