William "Bill" D. Johnson

April 23rd, 1942 – December 19th, 2021

William D. Johnson, 79, of Havana, IL, passed away at 2:37 am on Sunday, December 19, 2021 at his friend Sandra’s house in Lewistown, IL. He was born on April 23, 1942 in Havana, the son of Lloyd and Virginia (Stephens) Johnson. Bill married Judith Shilling on May 2, 1965 in Havana. Judith preceded Bill in death on February 7, 2013.

Also preceding him are his 2 brothers, Hubert “Bud” Johnson and Jackie Stephens.

Bill is survived his son, Steven (and Beth) Johnson of Lewistown, IL, 3 grandchildren, Tanner, Abigail and Campbell Johnson, brother, Larry Johnson of Canton, IL, sister, Linda Otto of Havana, special friend, Sandra Welker of Lewistown, 3 sister-in-laws, Adah Johnson of Chandlerville, IL, Priscilla Webber of Astoria, IL, Kim Taylor of Winchester, IL, brother-in-law, Gill (and Sheila) Shilling of Havana, and several nieces and nephews.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1961 to 1967 and was stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington with B Battery, 20th Artillery and had a rank of Sergeant (T) E-5.

Bill was a Teamsters Union Driver. He first worked at Duck Island in Banner, IL. He went on to work for Pete Vonachen and Peoria Blacktop, later owned by Dwayne Cullinan. When working for Peoria Blacktop, Bill enjoyed driving the company’s truck through the Peoria Santa Parade.

Bill was a member of the Lewistown American Legion Post #1, Havana Masonic Lodge and the Havana Gun Club. He enjoyed model trains and making them. He traveled to several model train shows. He also enjoyed going to his grandchildren’s sporting events, going to listen to music and dancing, and woodworking.

Cremation rites have been accorded. A graveside service will be held at 1 pm on Thursday, December 30, 2021 in the Laurel Hill Cemetery in Havana, IL. Military rites will be provided by the Lewistown American Legion Post #1 and the Army National Guard Military Honors Unit. Memorials may be made to Lewistown American Legion Post #1.
