Rita M. Jones

July 23rd, 1930 – May 21st, 2023

Rita M. Jones, 92, of Astoria, IL, passed away at 8:25 pm on Sunday, May 21, 2023 at The Elms in Macomb, IL. She was born on Wednesday, July 23, 1930 in Schuyler County, IL, the daughter of Louis and Lettie (Long) Ralston. Rita married Robert Jones on May 23, 1948 in Ripley, IL. Robert preceded Rita in death on June 17, 1992.

Also preceding her in death is her son, Bill Jones, one granddaughter, one great-granddaughter, 2 brothers, LaVerne and Victor Ralston, and one sister, Rosalie Holtkamp.

She is survived by three daughters, Kathy (and Bill) Pollitt and Donna (and Steve) Hamblin, of Astoria, and Rhonda (and Chuck) Sosey of Lewistown, IL, two sons, Danny Jones and Larry Jones, of Astoria, one daughter-in-law, Dee Jones of Astoria, twenty grandchildren, forty-six great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Rita was a farmwife, housewife and grandmother to all.

She was member of the Bader Christian Church and the Astoria HEA. Rita enjoyed gardening, baby-sitting, animals, especially chickens and her doxins, traveling and spending time with her family. Rita loved to cook. She cooked countless meals for her family and her fried chicken was one of her many specialties.

Rita always had time for others. She always had time to have a cup of coffee with someone. Over the past several years you could almost always find Rita on her front porch, where she would greet you with a smile and a wave. She had an open porch policy and rarely didn’t have someone on the porch to visit with.

Services will be held at 11 am on Thursday, May 25, 2023 at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria. Pastor Matt Haberman and Jason Rennert will officiate. A visitation will take place one hour prior to the service on Thursday. Interment will be in the Astoria Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the St. Jude Children’s Hospital or the Astoria Fire and Rescue Squad.

Rita was a wonderful neighbor and friend that I will miss greatly. Sat on her porch a lot along with our ladies across the street. Loved taking her baked goods and cantaloupe. She was one special lady!
