Gary D. "Mac" McDonald

May 10th, 1947 – September 2nd, 2023

Gary Dean "Mac" McDonald, age 76 of Rushville, Illinois, passed away at 12:40 a.m. Saturday, September 2, 2023 at HSHS St. Johns Hospital in Springfield, Illinois. He was born on May 10, 1947 in Quincy, Illinois, the son of Joseph Roy and Wyllodeane (Eyman) McDonald. Mac married Brenda Heffren on December 19, 1970 in Rushville. She survives.

Also surviving are his daughter Annette (Stanley) Cooley of Clearwater, Florida and his son James (Diana) McDonald of Jacksonville, Illinois, 3 grandchildren; Chelsea (Charlie) Erwin, Mackenzie Cooley and Theia Rose McDonald, 4 great-grandchildren; Mila Nicole Wesley and Grayson Wesley Cooley, Bailey Erwin and Andrew Erwin, his brother Bob McDonald of Quincy and his sister Betty (Gene) Cox of Quincy.

Mac was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers, Dick and Wayne McDonald and an infant sister.

He was a Marine Corps veteran, serving from 1966 to 1969 with a rank of Corporal.

Mac worked at the Western Illinois Correctional Center in Mt. Sterling, Illinois, retiring in 2009 with a rank of Correctional Lieutenant.

He was a member of the National Rifle Association. He enjoyed carving and wood working, reading books, watching old westerns, hunting with his friends and family and golfing.

Services for Mac will be held on Thursday, September 7th at 10:30 am at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria, Illinois. Pastor Fred fritz will officiate. Visitation will take place on Wednesday, September 6th from 4-6 pm at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Browning Cemetery with full military rites. Memorials in Mac's memory may be made to the Tiny House project in Rushville, Illinois.
