Harold Horwedel

November 13th, 1929 – March 18th, 2015

Harold Horwedel, age 85, of Vermont, IL, passed away at 7:45 pm on Wednesday, March 18, 2015 at Wesley Village in Macomb, IL. He was born on November 13, 1929 in Vermont, the son of Bernard and Leona (Aten) Horwedel. Harold married Mary Green on March 6, 1955 in Peoria Heights, IL. She survives.

Also surviving are his two daughters, Linda (and Ken) Miller of Coal City, IL and Lori (and Bruce) McCreight of Brimfield, IL, his daughter-in-law, Donna Horwedel of Table Grove, IL, eight grandchildren, Michael Miller of Coal City, Megan (and Matt) McIlvane of Munich, Germany, Kris (and Jessica) Horwedel of Vermont, Brittany Horwedel of Table Grove, Cassandra (and Nick Wright) Schoonover of Ipava, Shannon (and Cedric) Volkmer of Peoria, Grant McCreight of Monmouth and Morgan McCreight of Brimfield, one brother, Merle (and Ruth Ann) Horwedel of Buda, IL and four great-grandchildren, Danielle Schoonover, Hannah Horwedel, Avery Horwedel and Addalee Curtis.

He is preceded by son, Steve Horwedel and his sister, Mary Musselman.

Harold worked as a farmer and a rural mail carrier. He served as a staff sergeant in the Korean War, where he received the Bronze Star Medal.

Harold was a graduate of the last class of Vermont High School before consolidation. He was a member of the Vermont Christian Church, where he served on the church board, Eldorado Township board, Rushville Flying Club, and the Vermont American Legion. He also served on the V.I.T. School board. He enjoyed bowling in the Vermont bowling leagues, square dancing, flying and playing practical jokes.

Services will be held at 11 am on Monday, March 23, 2015 at the Vermont Christian Church. Pastor Dave Vandeman will be officiating. A visitation will be held from 2-4 pm on Sunday, March 22, 2015 at the Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria, IL. Interment will be in the Vermont Cemetery with full military rites in Vermont, IL. Memorials may be made to the Vermont Christian Church.
