Shirley J. Horwedel, 93, of Vermont, IL, passed away at 10:30 am on Friday, February 16, 2024 at The Elms in Macomb, IL. She was born on July 2, 1930 in Canton, IL, the daughter of William and Helen (McNatt) Roddis. Shirley married George Horwedel on August 19, 1949 in Ipava, IL. George preceded Shirley in death on April 24, 1991.
Also preceding her in death are her parents, one son; Neal Horwedel, one grandson, and one granddaughter.
She is survived by three sons; Mark (and Kathy) Horwedel of Belle Vista, AR, Craig (and Diane) Horwedel of Palm Coast, FL, and Lance (and Debby) Horwedel of Lewistown, IL, one daughter; Georgia Cassidy of Table Grove, IL and daughter-in-law; Misty Horwedel of Phoenix, AZ. Shirley first worked at Camp Ellis in Ipava. She went on to work at the Vermont State Bank. She later became Post Master in Ipava, where she retired.
She loved flowers and working in the garden. She enjoyed bird watching. Orioles and several other birds would frequent the bird feeders she had for them. She also enjoyed discussing the world’s problems with her neighbor, Randy, and giving him a hard time about politics.
A graveside service will be held at 2 pm on Monday, February 19, 2024 in the Ipava Cemetery. Pastor Cody Stinnett will be officiating. Memorials may be made to the Vermont Fire and Rescue Squad.
