Robert W. "Bob" Smith
July 3rd, 1943 – November 20th, 2024
Robert Wayne Smith, Sr., 81, of Harlingen, TX, formerly of Astoria, passed away on November 20, 2024 at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen. Robert was born on July 3, 1943 in Schuyler County to Eldon and Leona (Ebbert) Smith. He married Rebecca Boldt on June 4, 1977 in Mt. Sterling, Illinois. She survives.
Also surviving are his six children: Robert (Tracey) Smith, Jr. of Louisiana, Monty (Kay) Smith of Rushville, Wendy (Marty) Cameron of Astoria, Mandy (James) Stark of Havana, Elizabeth Coulter of Astoria, and Jacey (Nathan) Rauch of Rushville; 15 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren, one brother, Dennis (Judy) Smith of Frederick and one sister, Linda Billingsley of Huntsville and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Betty Curtis; one brother, Donald Smith; and one grandson, Nicholas Smith.
Bob was the owner and operator of B & P Variety in Mt. Sterling, Rushville Arms and Ammo in Rushville, IL and Smitty’s Gas and Grill in Browning, Illinois. After retirement, he moved to Indiana where he devoted his life to raising Jacey.
Robert enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking, landscaping and talking about politics; but most of all he enjoyed spending time with loved ones.
Cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial service will be held at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria on Thursday, December 5th at 7:00 p.m. Pastor Matthew Thiner will officiate. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service on Thursday. Memorials in Bob’s memory may be made to the Tunnels to Towers Foundation. Inurnment will take place in the Christian Neck Cemetery in rural Rushville at a later date.
