Theodore Lynn Richey

October 20th, 1951 – June 13th, 2025

Theodore L. "Ted" Richey passed away at the age of 73 on Friday, June 13, 2025 at his home, surrounded by family. He was born in Macomb, Illinois, on October 20, 1951, to Walter and Twila "Marie" (Teel) Richey. Ted was the youngest of 11 children and a lifelong resident of Vermont, Illinois.

Ted proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1971 to 1973, stationed in Germany. Afterward, he worked at the Vermont Foundry for 41 years before retiring. As a member of the Vermont American Legion, Ted continued supporting veterans and his community. In retirement, he cared for the Vermont Cemetery from 2014 to 2024, tending the grounds with dedication and pride.

Ted was formerly married to Maureen (Miller) Greene, and together they have two children: Kylee (Zachary) Gould of Vermont, IL, and Tobie (Jorge Macias) Richey of Adair, IL. He was a proud grandfather to five grandchildren—Hannah and Karter Gould of Vermont, and Taryn Richey, Braelyn, and Braxon Macias of Adair and one great-grandchild, Myles Alford.

In his free time, Ted enjoyed many outdoor activities. He loved arrowhead hunting, deer
hunting, mushroom hunting, fishing, playing cards, and golfing. You could often find him cruising around Vermont in his golf cart, visiting with neighbors. He had a great sense of humor and never missed a chance to crack a joke. Ted made daily trips to his daughter Kylee’s house to spoil his great-grandson Myles and sneak a few treats to his four-legged buddy, Morrison.

He is also survived by one brother, James "Jim" Richey of Vermont, IL, and one sister, Mary Ann Plate of Adair, IL, as well as many nieces and nephews. Ted was preceded in death by his parents and by siblings Charles, Walter "Bud", Lyle, Keith, and Willard Richey; Rose Marie "Sis" Osborne; Nelda Reid; and Linda Short.

Services will be held at 11 am on Monday, June 16, 2025 at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria, IL. Pastor Matthew Thiner will be officiating. A visitation will take place from 9 to 11 am before the service on Monday. Military rites will be provided by the Vermont American Legion. Interment will be in the Vermont Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made in Ted’s honor to the Vermont American Legion.

Condolences

I saw Ted riding the mower in the cemetary the week before Memorial day while I put out flowers. We waved at each other. He was hard working, and kept the cemetary looking very nice. Thoughts and prayers lifted for his family and friends. Old gradeschool classmate Lynn Shields Bubb

Whether he was cracking a joke, or telling a story (with a big ol grin and a twinkle in his eye) there was never a dull moment when Teddy was around. Whether he was tooling around in his golf cart, or cruising around in his truck, he always greeted you with a smile and a wave. Everyone always says "Rest in Peace". I say, go out and explore the universe Teddy! Tell some jokes! Captivate them with a story and a smile! We're sure gonna miss you down here, but i know your gonna have fun up there!
Hugs to you Kylee and Tobie, and to the rest of the family. You are all in our thoughts and prayers.
