Helen Derry-Shaw

September 17th, 1918 – July 15th, 2015

Helen Derry-Shaw, age 96, of Astoria, IL, passed away at 6:15 pm on Wednesday, July 15, 2015 at The Elms in Macomb, IL. She was born on September 17, 1918 in Astoria, IL, the daughter of Clayton and Rosa (Brillhart) Conner. Helen married Vernon Derry on January 15, 1938 in Keokuk, IA. He preceded her in death on April 11, 1971. She later married Orley Shaw on August 25, 1984 in Summum, IL. He preceded her in death on September 9, 2007.

Survivors include her son, Larry (and Marge) Derry of Astoria, IL, two daughters, Loretta (and Bob) Mummert of Astoria, IL and Linda (and Len) Allen of Rushville, IL, five grandchildren, DeeVon (and Wendell) Schisler, Rhonda (and Terry) Palm, Bobby (and Vicki) Mummert, Michelle (and Michael) Kessler, and Jeff Crabtree, eight great-grandchildren, six great-great grandchildren, one sister, Grace Bair of Astoria, IL, two step-daughters, Jean Barron of Rushville, IL and Joyce (and Dale) Ewen of Mahomet, IL, one step-son, Dr. Keith (and Gloria) Shaw of Dubuque, Iowa, seven step-grandchildren, eleven step-great-grandchildren, and 9 step-great-great-grandchildren.

Helen is preceded in death by her grandson, Michael Derry, four brothers, Robert, Donnie, Junior and Dick Connor, and two sisters, Ruby Vaile and Nelda Webb.

Helen worked as a clerk at Beekman Pharmacy, bookkeeper at Larry Derry’s Shop, secretary for Weight Watchers for 13 years, caretaker for the elderly and a cook and night custodian at Astoria Community School District.

She was a member of the Summum Christian Church where she was church board secretary and deaconess. She also enjoyed gardening, canning, going to yard sales, and crocheting. She enjoyed spending time with her family.

Services will be held at 10 am on Monday, July 20, 2015 at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria, IL. Pastor Ken Peterson will be officiating. A visitation will be held on Sunday, July 19, 2015 from 6 to 8 pm at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Summum Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Summum Christian Church or Astoria Fire and Rescue.
