Opal Stambaugh

Opalene (Opal) Stambaugh, age 80, passed away on Monday, August 3, 2026 at The Lamoine in Macomb, Illinois. She was born on December 15, 1945 in Astoria, the daughter of Orville and Fern (Thomas) Trone. On May 29, 1963, she married Virgil L. Stambaugh in Astoria. He preceded her in death on May 10, 2016.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, son Todd Stambaugh, daughter Jenny Hendricks, grandchildren Amanda and Joshua Hendricks, great-grandsons Dakota, Archer and Ransom Corrick and three sisters; Rosemary Williams, Ruth Trone and Dorothy Plate.
Opal is survived by her daughter, Jody (and Kevin) Kolves of Astoria, her son Tim (and Shannon) Stambaugh of Bardolph, daughter-in-law Kathy Davis of Astoria, son-in-law Mark Hendricks of Rushville, Illinois, thirteen grandchildren; Chase (and Holly) Lockard, Dalton (and Miranda) Kolves, Mariah Kolves, Christopher Kolves, Brent Kolves, Clinton Kolves, Willow Henderson, Dusti Hendricks, Molly (and Lucas) Corrick, Samantha Stambaugh, Nick (and Tabby) Rittenhouse, Joel (and Katie) Rittenhouse, and Ethan Stambaugh, many great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter, three sisters; Jeanette Hopkins and Ida (and Dave) Clark of Astoria, and June (and David) Hicke of Glasford, Illinois, and two brothers, Tom (and Pam) Trone and Steve (and Marian) Trone, both of Astoria.
Opal had many jobs throughout her life. She was a rural mail carrier for the United States Postal Service for many years. She also worked at Webster Industries and Walmart in Macomb. She was a licensed carpenter and helped build the Treatment and Detention Facility in Rushville. She was a farmer and held a CDL. Opal was the owner and operator, along with Virgil, of Virgil’s Kerr McGee in Astoria.
She was a member of the Astoria Christian Church where she taught Sunday school. She was a great baker, especially her breads. She enjoyed gardening, canning and raising all types of livestock on the farm. She was an avid reader.
Opal’s services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, August 6 at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria. Pastor Matthew Thiner will officiate. Visitation will take place on Wednesday, August 5, from 5-7 pm at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Woodland Cemetery, Astoria, Illinois. Memorials in Opal’s memory my be given to the Blessing Hearts Dominican Republic Trip. Shawgo Memorial Home has been entrusted with arrangements.

Opal was our mail carrier for awhile
& she was a very sweet & caring person. She brightened your day whenever she stopped to talk awhile.
